Alteration of ESB Networks' service cables

Sometimes, you may need to move your electricity connection due to building work or other changes on your property. ESB Networks offers a service alteration to help with this.

A service alteration involves a change to the service bringing electricity to a premises. If you’re moving your service within 50 metres of the main ESB Networks connection, this is a standard service alteration .There is a charge for this service; please see ESB Networks Statement of Charges .

If the relocation is more than 50 metres, this is a non-standard service alteration and you will need to call our Customer support team on 1800 372 757 for further information.

 

Types of service alterations

O/H
Overhead

An overhead service alteration involves the service that runs overhead from a pole to the premises, often attached to the chimney or gable end.

U/G
Underground

An underground service alteration involves the service that runs underground from a pole or minipillar to the premises.

Before you apply

Safe Electric certificate

 

If your service alteration requires the relocation of your electricity meter, your electrical contractor must have submitted a Safe Electric certificate in order for your application to be scheduled. Additionally, you need to advise ESB Networks of the meter relocation at the time of the service alteration request.

Ducting

 

If your electricity service is being moved underground, ducting will be required. Customers are responsible for all ducting to support this application. Your contractor must install the duct, and you need to inform ESB Networks once it is ready for inspection. Further details about ducting specifications can be found in this  PDF document

Service alteration charges

There is a charge for a service alteration which must be paid in advance.


  • Standard service alteration charges cover single underground/overhead connection to the meter. A further charge may apply where additional work is required. Any additional costs will be quoted by your local ESB Networks office and invoiced separately.
  • Charges for non-standard alterations will be quoted by your local ESB Networks office.
  • Charges for commercial premises alterations will be quoted by your local ESB Networks office.
Make a payment

Once you have your quote, you can pay in the way that suits you best. When making payment please have your quotation to hand for reference number purposes.

Do I need this service?

You don't need this service if you are: 

 

  • Connecting electricity for the first time
  • Changing your service capacity
  • Moving an electricity pole on your property 

 

For these services, please register for an ESB Networks online account and request the service you require online.

 

How long will it take to complete the service alteration?

Once we receive:

 

  • Your payment
  • The Safe Electric certificate
  • And ducting (if required)

 

A standard service alteration will be completed within 5-6 weeks. A non-standard service alteration will take longer. Please contact our customer care team on 1800 372 757 for further information on time frames for a non standard service alteration.
