Remote Switch Capability of Smart Meters in Vacant Properties

In January 2025, a new suite of smart meter functionality was enabled.  This facilitates the remote switch capability of smart meters and is only permitted for the following customer facing service on the instruction of electricity suppliers. At a vacant premises which have a smart meter, both disconnection and reconnection will be processed remotely and without the need to attend the premises. This service has, until now, required a network technician's visit. The new capability will mean we can improve the reconnection time and reduce costs for customers moving into a vacant property.

Moving In To a Vacant Premises

Once a customer has moved out of a property and has closed their electricity supply account, the vacant property can be disconnected on the instruction of their electricity supplier, until a new customer is ready to move in. This service has, until now, required a network technician's visit to premises. The new capability will improve the reconnection time and reduce costs for customers moving into a vacant property.

Moving in FAQs

I'm moving into a new property, how do I reconnect my electricity supply?

Once you have agreed an electricity supply contract, your electricity supplier will process the reconnection on your behalf.

Customers should regard the connection to their property as being LIVE whilst disconnected as the electricity supply could be restored remotely and at any time.

In most cases reconnection will be done remotely. But occasionally an ESB Networks technician may need to attend your premises.

Will I be notified once the electricity supply has been reconnected?

If you have shared your mobile number, you will receive a text message from ESB Networks confirming the reconnection of your supply.
