Building your own home – how to get connected

You have made the decision to build your own home. The site has been selected and the plans drawn up. Follow this step-by-step guide to get your new home connected to the electricity network.

You can apply online or download the Application Form. All details are also outlined in our step-by-step guide below. This application is for an electricity connection only. You can also avail of alternative Electricity Suppliers.

Step by Step Guide

You need full planning permission for your new home from your Local Authority. If your Application Form does not include your planning permission number it may be requested at a future stage.

You  need an Ordnance Survey map (scale 1:2500-1:10560) showing the location of your new home. Mark the location of your new home with a red pen. You also need a detailed site plan (scale 1:100-1:500) showing your new home.Your builder or architect should be able to provide you with both of these. Photocopies are acceptable.

Check if any overhead electricity lines are crossing your site. If there are, you need to mention this on the additional information section of the Application Form. For more information on overhead wires, click here.

Once we get your completed application (and site map/plans) we put your details on the system and send you an acknowledgement and reference number.

We then prepare a quote which will include your unique Meter Point Reference Number (MPRN). This is an important number required by you and your electrical contractor. We also issue you with a Welcome Pack which contains important information about your new connection.

Note: Charges for a standard 12kVA or 16kVA connection within 500 metres (rural) or 50 metres (urban) distance are set out in the document ESB Networks DAC Statement of Charges (PDF | 629 KB).

Charges for connections outside these distances will be established based on a site visit.

Once you have your quote, you can make the payment by whichever method suits you best.

Once payment is received, a detailed design is carried out and any necessary permissions and wayleaves are sought from landowners. When these permissions are agreed, construction of your connection can start.

In some cases it may be necessary to erect a new electricity pole on your site within 50 metres of the outdoor meter cabinet. Read your Welcome Pack for more information on outdoor meter cabinet positioning.

If no significant extra work is required, we will generally complete your connection within 12 weeks after payment has been received.

At least two weeks before you want the connection to be made live you must:

Ensure your Electrical Contractor sends an ETCI wiring certificate to their regulatory body when the wiring has been completed. This will then be notified to us.

Call us on 1850 372 757 or +353 21 2386555 when your ducting is complete and confirm that the earth trench and outdoor cabinet has been provided for the electricity meters as per our ESB Networks' Specification (PDF | 1MB).

Once all of the above requirements have been met, your new connection can be made live. Your electrical contractor is then responsible for making the power live in your new home. The electrical contractor will be informed by text message when the power is live, provided a mobile phone number has been supplied on the electrical Completion Certificate.

This application is for an electricity connection only. You can choose from a variety of electricity suppliers.
