Ireland’s electricity needs are growing rapidly as new homes, businesses, and renewable energy projects are progressing across the country.
Through PR6, ESB Networks is actively supporting this growth by strengthening and evolving the electricity network through sustained, long-term investment, ensuring our network is resilient, reliable, and ready to meet Ireland’s current and future needs.
At the same time, ESB Networks is accelerating capacity in the near term by ensuring efficient use of the existing network infrastructure. With additional focus on areas of highest demand and growth, we are developing and delivering interventions that are helping to make capacity available more quickly and efficiently, where it matters most.
This includes fast-tracked upgrades across existing substations to strengthen performance, the installation of additional power transformers to increase capacity, and targeted circuit upgrades to carry higher electricity loads. Together, these improvements will support customers in high-growth areas to connect in a timely and efficient way.
ESB Networks is working across Ireland to increase capacity in the areas where electricity demand is growing. This core work focuses on maximising the use of existing network assets to deliver more capacity where customers need it most.
Over the coming months and years, ESB Networks will continue strengthening the electricity system so it can support Ireland’s growing communities and clean energy ambitions. Customers can expect a resilient, future ready network with greater capacity where it is needed most. As this specific programme of work progresses, we will share updates in our ‘Project Highlights’ section to keep customers, businesses and stakeholders informed about the improvements happening in their local area.
ESB Networks completed a major upgrade at its Portlaoise substation, doubling the amount of electricity available to customers across Laois and the wider Midlands region.
