What is Energy Flexibility?
Energy flexibility is the ability to change when and how electricity is used. By making small adjustments to when certain activities take place, homes, businesses and farms can help make better use of available renewable electricity and support a cleaner electricity future.
This campaign aims to make energy flexibility easy to understand for our customers and accessible to everyone by providing practical information, resources and real-life examples.
Why Flexibility Matters?
Ireland’s electricity network is evolving, with more renewable energy generation on the system and increasing demand from new electric technologies such as electric cars. Energy flexibility helps balance these changes by encouraging electricity use at times when it is more readily available.
Simple actions can make a difference when many people take part, including:
- Charging electric vehicles overnight.
- Running appliances like dishwashers or washing machines outside peak, demand periods, for example 5-7pm. These times can sometimes depend on the location as some areas have more demand than others at different times.
- Adjusting electricity use when possible throughout the day means that there is more renewable energy used when it is available and there is less congestion on the electricity system which reduces the likelihood of outages for all customers.
