ESB Networks’ Demand Flexibility Product is a new initiative that aims to utilise medium-duration flexibility services to help manage congestion on the electricity network.

What is the Demand Flexibility Product?  

The Demand Flexibility Product was developed by ESB Networks as a flexibility opportunity for new and existing Flexibility Service Providers, launched at the end of 2024.

The goal of the product is to provide medium-duration flexibility in order to manage the challenges facing the network, particularly on the distribution system at pre-determined locations. While benefitting the electricity system, the Demand Flexibility Product will provide Flexibility Service Providers with new revenue opportunities.

How does it work? 

The Demand Flexibility Product has primarily been developed to manage congestion on the distribution network. This product will be offered in geographical locations where the local electricity distribution network is severely congested. 

 

ESB Networks are aiming to contract up to 109MW of capacity in the initial procurement round, with a goal of 500MW over the next few years. ESB Networks will issue dynamic operating envelopes to the successful Flexibility Service Providers who can participate in other markets and stack revenues subject to satisfying their operating envelope.

 

The Demand Flexibility Product is open to existing or future electricity users who: 

  • Operate (or will operate) in the required locations  
  • Apply and meet the eligibility criteria


 

To take part in future rounds, Flexibility Service Providers must follow the public procurement process on the eTenders portal.

Where will this product be located? 

The Demand Flexibility Product will be offered in areas across Ireland where there is localised congestion on the electricity network.

How can I apply?  

Applications for the first phase of this product is now closed. Once the first round of procurement has been completed, ESB Networks may initiate subsequent rounds of procurement, depending on network needs. Please return to this website for further updates or get in touch at engagement@esbnetworks.ie
