Cyclical meter replacement

Why electricity meters are being upgraded

As the licensed Distribution System Operator (DSO), ESB Networks is authorised by the Commission for Regulation of Utilities (CRU) to provide metering and data services to the electricity market in Ireland.

In fulfilling our wider responsibility to manage and maintain all network assets, we ensure that electricity meters are regularly maintained and upgraded. This ongoing programme guarantees that meters continue to meet the operational and regulatory needs of the electricity market.

Meter upgrades are carried out on a rolling basis and are included in the CRU’s PR6 determination.

Frequently asked questions

Why are electricity meters being upgraded?

Consistent with fulfilling our wider responsibility to manage and maintain all network assets, we ensure that electricity meters are regularly maintained and upgraded. Funding is included within PR6 for meter upgrades. ESB Networks ensures this is done in the most economic and efficient manner which has resulted in us commencing this work in early 2026.

We are upgrading electricity meters to provide the latest technology which will support future innovation in the home. The upgrade will also enable us to monitor and respond more efficiently to service disruptions, ensuring we can maintain a high level of service for our customers.

Is there a charge for the meter upgrade?
Like other upgrades the cost is included in your existing charges for use of the electricity network.
What additional features are on the upgraded meter?

The upgrade uses LTE-M or NB-IOT networks which are based on 4G and provided by Three Ireland. You will continue to have access to more detailed information about your electricity usage through the ESB Networks Online Account, access to time-of-use tariffs from suppliers and receive payment for any electricity exported onto the grid from solar panels.

The upgrade also includes a new P1 Port, which will allow you to access near real-time information. The P1 Port will be available in late 2026.

Who do I call if I have a question about the meter works at my property?

Who will carry out the meter upgrade work?

The upgrade will be carried out by either an ESB Networks technician or an electrical contractor working on our behalf.

All our installers carry photo ID badges identifying them. All ID badges have a photograph of the installer, company logos and clearly state they are working for, or on behalf, of ESB Networks. If you have any concerns, you can call us on 1800 928 123 or  01 698 5005

Will the meter upgrade affect my electricity bill?

No, the meter upgrade will not affect your electricity bill.

When we upgrade your meter, we take a final reading from your older meter and an opening reading from your new one. These readings are sent directly to your supplier.  This ensures your supplier has an accurate record of your energy use, so you’ll only be billed for the electricity you actually use.

The upgrade does not affect your tariff, your account details, or how your usage is recorded.  It simply ensures you have the latest technology which will support future innovation.

How long does it take for the meter be replaced?

The meter upgrade takes approximately 45 minutes.

Please note: to carry out the work safely, we’ll need to turn off your electricity supply. Once the new meter is installed and tested by the technician, your power will be restored. The old meter will be taken away.

Do I need to be home when the meter is being replaced?

You don’t need to be home for the technician to upgrade the meter if the meter is located outside your premises. If the meter is located inside, we’ll be touch with you to arrange an appointment. Alternatively, if you would like to book an appointment at a time that is convenient for you,  you can do so by contacting us on 1800 928 123 with your MPRN.
