ESB Networks is currently undertaking critical infrastructure upgrade works on Bedford Row substation as part of an investment in excess of €25 million. The station has been powering Dublin city centre since the 1930s.
30 kilometres of cable are powered out of the substation into over one hundred smaller substations across the city centre. The first phase of this project’s construction commenced in 2020, and works are set to continue until 2027. During the upgrade Bedford Row will remain in service ensuring continuity of supply for customers.
Speaking on the ongoing works, John O’Donoghue, Area Manager, ESB Networks said: “As Ireland’s energy landscape evolves, ESB Networks remains committed to delivering the infrastructure needed to support a clean electric future through creating a smarter, more resilient network that can meet the needs of a decarbonised society. The upgrade at Bedford Row will facilitate economic growth locally, through increasing the reliability and resilience of the network, improving security of supply for customers”.
Once completed, the project will ensure that the electricity network is better equipped to meet growing electricity demand as Ireland accelerates its transition to a low-carbon future. The works are being delivered by ESB Networks, ESB Engineering and Major Projects (EMP), and delivery partners PowerComm & Moston Construction.
