ESB Networks complete critical infrastructure upgrade works in Portlaoise, doubling capacity for customers

ESB Networks has successfully completed a critical infrastructure project in Portlaoise which involved the uprating of two 31.5 MVA transformers to 63 MVA, doubling capacity and enabling new customer homes, businesses, and farms to connect to the electricity network, as well as significantly reinforcing the reliability of the network in the Midlands region.

Completed in just 24 weeks, the upgrade ensures that the electricity network is better equipped to meet growing electricity demand and support the integration of renewable energy sources as Ireland accelerates its transition to a low-carbon future. The works were delivered by ESB Networks, ESB Engineering and Major Projects (E&MP), EirGrid, and delivery partners Omexom, Kilcawley Construction, and TLI Group.

Alan Rossiter, Strategy and Network Development Manager, ESB Networks said: “This upgrade forms part of ESB Networks’ broader strategy to future-proof Ireland’s electricity infrastructure. By enhancing the capacity of key substations like Portlaoise, we are ensuring that the electricity network can continue to deliver safe, secure, and sustainable electricity to homes, farms, businesses, and communities across the country.”

As Ireland’s energy landscape evolves, ESB Networks remains committed to delivering the infrastructure needed to support a clean electric future through creating a smarter, more resilient network that can meet the needs of a decarbonised society.
