ESB Networks has reached an important milestone at Limerick’s Dock Road 38 kV Station, with the successful installation of the first of two new 18.75 MVA transformers.
Once commissioned, the final upgrade will deliver a total of 27.5 MVA of additional capacity, supporting growing demand across Limerick city while enabling residential, commercial, and industrial development.
This upgrade will provide enough network capacity to support approximately 7,000 homes, including facilitating the electrification of heating and transport.
Alan Rossiter, Strategy and Network Development, Senior Manager, ESB Networks added:
“This investment at the Dock Road 38 kV Station is a key step in supporting Limerick’s continued growth, helping to accelerate the capacity needed for new homes, businesses, and future development across this growing region.
Through targeted strategic interventions ESB Networks is working to ensure the electricity network can keep pace with Limerick’s housing needs while also supporting Ireland’s transition to a low-carbon future.
By optimising existing assets, we are also strengthening the network in the near-term for existing customers by preparing it to support low carbon technologies such as heat pumps and electric vehicles, all the while keeping Limerick’s long-term economic growth in sight.”
These works form part of ESB Networks’ wider programme of investments under Price Review 6, to strengthen and build out the electricity network across the country, ensuring it can meet increasing demand while supporting Ireland’s housing and climate ambitions.
