ESB Networks announces a new milestone in Ireland’s journey towards net zero, national solar capacity has now exceeded 2 GW for the first time.
Since energising our first solar farm in April 2022, Ireland has seen remarkable growth in solar energy, with over 155,000 rooftop installations across homes, farms, and businesses. In fact, at its summer peak, solar met more than 21% of national electricity demand, a powerful testament to the role of renewables in our energy future.
ESB Networks plays a central role in enabling this transformation and this milestone reflects the collective efforts of homeowners, communities, developers, and policymakers working together to build a cleaner, more resilient electricity system, while accelerating towards Ireland’s target of 80% renewable electricity by 2030.
To mark the occasion, John O’ Connor, Head of Programme Delivery, ESB Networks, Priscila McGeehan, Director of Communications & Strategy, Solar Ireland, Ronan Power, CEO, Solar Ireland, and Greg Hanna, Renewables & Major Load Connections Manager, ESB Networks, met with Darragh O’Brien TD, Minister for Climate, Energy and the Environment, to make the announcement and discuss the future of solar in Ireland.
