Proposal for General Application of RfG Requirements for Ireland

The consultation on the non-exhaustive parameters for the Requirements for Generators [RfG] has now closed. This proposal document is produced jointly by EirGrid plc in its role as the Transmission System Operator in Ireland and ESB Networks in their role as the Distribution System Operator in Ireland. This document contains the proposed parameters and explanations as to the reasons for their adoption, which are now formally submitted to the Commission for Regulation of Utilities [CRU] for approval. It also contains responses to the consultations and the System Operator replies.

Modification No. 42 Clarity of Power Factor Requirements for Windfarms at Low Power Levels

CRU has approved Modification No. 42 of the Distribution Code. This modification allows reactive power at a windfarm’s connection point to vary up to a maximum of 0.12 of Q / P [importing VARs] when generation output is below 12% of Registered Capacity.

European Network Codes: Technical Requirements for Generators Consultation

The Network Code Requirements for Generators [RfG], is one of three Connection Codes which form part of the European Network Codes. It seeks to provide a clear legal framework for grid connections and facilitate electricity trading whilst ensuring system security, facilitating the integration of renewable energy and ensuring a more efficient use of the network.

The RfG ‘entered into force’ on 17 May 2016, however an implementation period is allowed for. The RfG only applies to generators that have concluded a final and binding contract for the purchase of their main generating plant after 17 May 2018.

The RfG defines the requirements applicable to new generators with a Maximum Capacity of 800 W or greater. Generators are placed into one of four ‘type’ categories A-D which provide for a sliding scale of technical requirements.

Consultation Process:

EirGrid and ESB Networks is seeking and welcomes industry views on these proposals. Consultation responses shall be submitted to GridCode@eirgrid.com by 9th February 2018.

We would welcome any comments you have on the proposals, but for ease of response a template for responses can be used, and is available here

EirGrid and ESB Networks will host a webinar, scheduled for 16^th January 2018, to present the proposals in detail and give industry an opportunity to discuss them in advance of the consultation closing.
