We are ESB Networks. We ensure that electricity gets to the homes and businesses of our 2.3 million electricity customers, safely and efficiently. We have invested over €6bn in the electricity network over the last 10 years to ensure that it is reliable and enables communities and businesses in Ireland to grow and develop.
We provide a wide range of services to our customers, all of whom need to be registered with an electricity supplier. Each year we carry out over 9 million meter readings and provide these to your supplier in order to ensure you receive correct billing. We also deliver a range of technical services such as restoring supply when network faults occur, for example due to storms. Other services, some of which are chargeable, include undertaking line alterations at the customer’s request and carrying out service alterations requested via suppliers.
Whether you are a domestic or a commercial customer, we will provide a new electricity connection that best suits your needs.
Your safety is our priority. Electricity is a powerful energy source but it can be dangerous. Always follow our safety guidelines. To ensure you stay safe, stay clear of overhead, underground and fallen electricity wires, always look out for electricity wires when you are outside . ‘Stay safe, stay clear’. Delivering a future-ready network service and ensuring operational excellence requires a deep understanding of where, how, when customers use the network, why faults occur, and having the ability to deploy solutions quickly. Central to these efforts is the empowering employees with the technology necessary to gather, manage and analyse network data.
The safety of over 1,950 Network Technicians and over 1,000 other field staff who travel alone is paramount. In order to reduce the potential vulnerability of our staff working alone, ESB Networks introduced a safety device to provide extra reassurance. This project tested and assessed the suitability and associated integration into our digital system of the V.ALERT lone working device to improve lone working safety in case of an emergency.

With the use of data analytics ESB Networks pursued a new avenue in identifying metering anomalies and developing a tool that can identify suspicious readings related to meter interference. The project developed an algorithm that can rank a pool of different meter readings based on statistical probability. ESB Networks revised the initial algorithm to a more complex version that is fine-tuned over time as more data is collected and analysed. The expected roll out of smart meters should lead to an increase in data volume and allow further fine tuning of the algorithm with AI.
